LP-PRP vs LR-PRP is an important discussion in regenerative medicine, but leukocyte concentration is only one factor that determines the characteristics of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP).
What Is LP-PRP?
Leukocyte-Poor PRP (LP-PRP) contains a reduced concentration of white blood cells. It is frequently used in intra-articular applications, particularly knee osteoarthritis, where limiting the inflammatory component of the preparation may be desirable.
What Is LR-PRP?
Leukocyte-Rich PRP (LR-PRP) contains higher levels of leukocytes alongside concentrated platelets. It is commonly used in musculoskeletal applications such as tendinopathies, ligament injuries and other soft-tissue conditions.
However, current evidence does not support viewing LP-PRP as simply “better” than LR-PRP, or vice versa. The optimal PRP composition may depend on the clinical indication and treatment protocol.
LP-PRP vs LR-PRP: Is Platelet Dose More Important?
Increasing attention is being given to platelet concentration and total platelet dose.
Two PRP preparations classified as LP-PRP can still deliver very different numbers of platelets. Clinical research, particularly in knee osteoarthritis, suggests that platelet dose may be an important factor influencing PRP outcomes.
This means PRP should not be evaluated by leukocyte content alone.
